       SS-Obersturmführer - SS 1st Lt. Richard Thomalla, the protege of SS-Polizeiführer - SS Police Chief Odilo Globocnik, built the camp.  SS-Reichsführer - SS Empire Leader Heinrich Himmler appointed SS-Obersturmführer - SS 1st Lt. Franz Stangl as first commandant.  SS-Obersturmführer - SS 1st Lt. Franz Reichleitner (no picture available) succeeded him in September 1942.

       Stangl, an SS officer with a background in Aktion T4 - Operation T4, arrived in April 1942. He commanded a small group of notorious SS men, among whom were:

       Most of these were recruited mainly from Operation T4 - Euthanasia_Program. Stangl also commanded a guard company of Ukrainians. Anywhere between 200 to 300 Jews worked in teams in the gas chambers and burial pit areas. They had to clean out the killing rooms, remove gold teeth from the corpses and push trolleys heaped with bodies towards the pits. About 1,000 Jews worked at the platform cleaning up the cattle cars, removing debris. They also were forced to work in the shaving hut, the undressing barracks, and in the sorting sheds.
