Koldychevo - Concentration camp

Camp Koldychevo - Koldyczewo in Polish - was first used as a forced labor camp in Belorussia established by the Nazis late in 1941. Later it became a notorious concentration camp for Russians and Poles who were interned along with Jews transferred from the surrounding ghettos of Baranovichi, Nowogrodek, Slonim, and others as can be seen from the well-documented link, "The Jewish history of Poland and Belorussia." The commandant of the camp was Fritz Jorn, an SS - Hauptscharfuhrer, during the period from 1942 to 1944. Prior to the camp's liquidation on 29 June 1944, over 22,000 inmates were murdered and buried in 38 mass graves in and around the camp. An active Jewish resistance group, led by Shlomo Kushnir, existed within camp Koldychevo.

On the night of March 17, 1944, he succeeded in leading almost all the Jewish inmates still alive out of the camp after first killing ten Nazi guards. By means of tools that they obtained, the prisoners breached a wall. They practiced moving slowly and crawling on all fours, sewed cloth onto the soles of their shoes, and equipped themselves with knives. Kushnir committed suicide when he and 25 others were recaptured by the Nazis. Others who managed to get away joined the partisan unit of Tuvia Bielski, in the forests.
