Under the watchful eye of a collaborating Dutch constable these smiling railroad workers pause for a quick snapshot. They were in the process of laying the fateful side track, connecting camp Westerbork with the main railway line at the now defunct railway station of Hooghalen.
This station was about 5.1 km (3.17 m) from the entrance of the camp, along the Oosthalerweg. Ultimately, via this new side track these same workers, and many tens of thousands with them, would be deported for extermination at either Birkenau or Sobibor. After all, work would set them free also. ARBEIT MACHT FREI - Work liberates, right?
