Camp Westerbork - Potato harvesting

Commemorating the Jewish victims of Juden Durchgangslager Westerbork

Digging up potatoes was considered a bit heavier work than some of the other jobs. Nevertheless, they worked outdoors and life appeared good enough, even for those who wore the armband indicating they were looked upon as criminals. The armband with the letter 'S' stood for Straf - Punishment. However, once inside Westerbork life was insecure. The threat of deportation always hang over the inmate's head, especially when he or she was marked with an 'S.' Then why was there a smile on this young woman's face? Perhaps even in the darkest hour there always was a ray of hope for a brighter and better tomorrow.

Digging up potatoes was a job for those who 'deserved' it
