Camps in Holland - Location of the camps |
|
This map of the Netherlands shows the approximate location of the four major concentration camps in use by the Nazis during WW II as well as the location of Internment camp Schoorl in the province of Noord-Holland, north-west of Amsterdam, which briefly was in use before camp Amersfoort was opened. Two camps, transit camp Westerbork and concentration camp Vught, were used as transit centers for the deportation of Dutch Jews and Sinti to extermination centers in eastern Europe. The other two, Amersfoort in the province of Utrecht and Ommen in the province of Overijsel, were used mainly as penal camps while Schoorl initially served to house foreign nationals stranded in the Netherlands after 15 May 1940 following the outbreak of the war. The distance from camp Westerbork to Assen was only about 8.02 mi (12.9 km). Assen is the capital of the province of Drente. In comparison, Camp Vught was closer to 's Hertogenbosch - a.k.a. den Bosch, the capital of the province of Noord-Brabant, namely 3.1 mi (5 km). Besides housing Jewish inmates, camp Vught was also used by the Nazis as penal camp for Dutch political prisoners and hostages. In contrast to the harsh treatment prisoners received in Amersfoort, Vught, and Ommen, Jewish inmates housed in camp Westerbork were treated less cruel to dull their senses with a faint hope to camouflage the reality of their forthcoming deportation and subsequent extermination in Poland.
Camp Amersfoort, the other notorious concentration camp, was built to the east of Amsterdam. Police Transit Camp Amersfoort was a penal center where inmates received cruel treatment, especially Jews and communists.
Camp Ommen came into being primarily to punish black marketers and slave labor dodgers. It was to the south of Westerbork, approximately a distance of 24.9 mi (40 km), and 12.4 mi (20 km) from the German border. The harsh reality for inmates in Ommen was that they were treated brutally and without respect. They met with extreme violence during most of the days of their incarceration.
